Anyone have any suggestions for a good fitting fly mask for a large headed horse? My Friesion/Morgan/Qtr horse mix has a longer/bigger head and the XL Horse sized mask ends up ending right below his eyes! I think I need the length more than the larger diameter; so not a draft horse sized. I have the Farnam brand, with ears, that has the double velcro straps and that works well for everyone else.

Thanks

Hi Angie, I have a paint X (the X being something unknown but large) and I have had trouble with fly masks for him. Horse sizes are too small...they will go on but because they don't reach enough behind his jowls, he pulls them off easily. I have a Cashel Crusader, warmblood size, that fits well, except that the ears are too big and flop over at the tips. I got that at Smartpakequine.com. (He has the pink-eared one and looks like a big, floppy-eared rabbit in it; fortunately, he has a sense of humor!) The other one that fits him is a mosquito mask from Scheiders, the blue mesh one. The straps have elastic, so I can make them tight without worrying about him getting caught on stuff. Also the price is very reasonable, around $15 as I recall. I just think he looks cute w/rabbit ears.

If you need me to, I'd be happy to look up the links for you. Let me know.

Um, Erika, I am talking about Tango here. Notice I said length needed, not a huge span between the eyes! LOL!!!

Kathy, I'll check Schneiders, and I was thinking Cashel but wanted input from others. I also have a Paint, and the XL horse fits him o.k.

The long Cashel fits a big head paint in our herd. He needs the longer one to cover his pink nose.

Anyone used the "bug eyed" Kensington? I emailed ValleyVet and they said the large was Qtr sized, the XL Warmblood. I supposed if I go with that one, I can get a Lge, and if it's too small, give it to the paint. I like the fact that the eye part is so far away from the horses eyes. The shipping is free there, so I would not be out the extra for shipping.

I wish there was like a traveling horse store that carried a variety of items to try on our horses, I hate ordering something and then it's not the right fit.

Ladies,

are you talking about a large(horse sized) Cashel, or a warmblood size? I thought I read to go by halter sizes, which don't help as the only halter I use on him is the knotted rope halter. The only halters available locally don't fit him, it's the length is too short.

Angie, I got the Cashel warmblood size. Aside from the floppy ears, it fits Paint fine. In fact, I just ordered another one, with the longer nose, for when it gets hotter and the flies get worse. I had the horse size last year, which he pulled off continuously. If you go to smartpak, they have a sizing chart available, with inches. Click on the product and then you can choose description, reviews or sizing info on the tabs on the left of the page.

Angie, LOL, I think we've all confused you more as everyone is using a different size! But, to answer your question, Sparkles has a big head, but it's not warmblood size and usually anything designated for WB heads is too big for her (even tho she is a WB). Her head is longer, rather than wider, if that makes any sense. So, with the Cashel, I bought the large horse size and it fit her well.

I've used the bug eyed type as well (don't remember what brand) and liked it a lot.
