Posted on Tuesday, Jun 3, 2008 - 9:25 pm: Has anyone heard of a horse testing positive they knew or were around? Everyone requires the test, but is it even around anymore? I've never known a horse to get it in the 10 years I've been around horses. |

Posted on Wednesday, Jun 4, 2008 - 8:35 am: I have seen 2 positives in my 20 years of testing, both in the same year and both recently imported from the mountains of Virgina. The incidence of EIA varies widely with respect to location and the worse areas tend to be along the lower Mississippi river and Texas. For more on this subject see Diseases of Horses » Cardiovascular, Blood, and Immune System » Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) and the Coggins Test.DrO |

Posted on Thursday, Jun 5, 2008 - 9:38 am: Hi,Below is an excerpt from a recent Horse Health Newsletter, and the link. You may have to sign up to view the entire article. https://www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=11970 "According to Tim Bartlett, DVM, director of equine programs for the Indiana State Board of Animal Health, three horses on a south-central Indiana farm have tested positive for the disease in the last few weeks. State and federal veterinarians have been working with the owner to identify the source of infection and determine if any other animals are at risk. All three positive horses have been euthanized; two herdmates have tested negative and remain under quarantine until further testing is complete. " This was from the June 3 newsletter. Lilo |

The tests were taken twice and they are positive we have concern since we are only about a mile and a half away. The other concern is horses from our facility had been at some of the same functions as this horse, i.e., trail rides, etc. We are having to test the entire herd of 20 and waiting for results. What are the symptoms besides fever? |

Posted on Thursday, Apr 29, 2010 - 7:30 am: Linda,The symptoms of the three clinical forms of EIA are explained in detail in the article on this disease. You will find it at Diseases of Horses » Cardiovascular, Blood, and Immune System » Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) and the Coggins Test. If after reading the article you have questions about EIA you should post them in the forum associated with that article by starting a new discussion. The button for that is on the same page as the article at the bottom under the list of other discussions. Thanks for helping us keep HA organized. DrO |
