Hi
From your article I age my recently bought youngster at somewhere between 12months and 2.5 years old. I bought him as a 'yearling' but from a man who had bought him only earlier that day and who thought he was a colt but my vet says it is likely he has been gelded unless both testicles are retained within the abdomen, which he thought unlikely. He has all 6 baby teeth and no permanent but the corner is not a really baby triangle - the flatter part of it is just beginning to show wear. My vet just lifted his lip and the front when I said he was a yearling 'thats about right' but didn't look at surface wear etc. Now I am concerned that I have a 2 year old gelding and not a yearling colt!!! What should I look for in his teeth to tell if he was last years foal (early?) or maybe a late foal from 2006? I am only concerned as at 13.2hh now I want him to make over 15hh which if already 2 he may well not. Thanks for any advice on aging between 6m-2.5 yrs. PS his tail is still wrinkly hair but below his hocks and he has a mane level with the lower line of his neck (- so does my definite yearling!)his rump is considerably higher than withers and he still looks long in the hind canon bones.

JoAnn if the corner deciduous incisors are not yet fully in wear I would estimate the age as more than 12 months but less than 18 months but it is not possible to get closer than this.

Hi thanks for that. I am uploading photos of his teeth (as you can imagine not the easiest pics to capture!) - I would be grateful to anyone who has lots of contact with yearling and 2 year old teeth who could help me decide whether he was born 2006 or 2007 as he will have to be sold if he's already two as he won't grow big enough.

yearling teeth?

If I am seeing the picture correctly he has three sets of teeth, the front two, and two teeth on either side.
Comparing this mouth to my 2yr olds they look pretty similar.
Are any of the teeth loose? If you actually find a loose tooth that really helps with dating as they are pretty consistent at what age they loose teeth.

They also look just like my three 2007 fillies.

Thanks - he has the 6 teeth but this only narrows it down to between 1year and 2.5 years. He has not shed baby front incisors or got bumps in gum yet for new ones so he's under 2.5. I just wondered how worn the corner teeth should/would be for a yearling/2 year old/what shape they'd be if anyone can compare the pics with their babies teeth?!

How about a whole horse picture? And what breed is he? My AQHA yearlings, all born April and May 2007 are between 14 and 14.2 at the top of the hip. Many yearlings are "downhill" so that's where I measure at that age.

Though it is difficult to know for sure from this angle the first image's corner incisor does not look fully in wear suggesting a 2007 foal. Good images of the table (occlusal) surfaces would help nail it down better.
