I have a lovely AQHA yearling palomino filly with great conformation, a hip to die for, great bone and feet, a beautiful dished face with a broad forehead and no one gives her a second look because of her pale blond color! They totally miss her bombproof nature and sweet personality. She has a thick white mane and tail, but she is faded looking. Of my yearlings, she the best put together and when people look at them, they agree on that, but are put off by the pale color! Now as we all know, you can't ride color, but I also know that finding a horse a home requires curb appeal! To that end, has anyone ever tried anything that worked to enhance the color? I am afraid it will require stalling her during the day which I won't do--she's a baby for Pete's sake! But I have heard and seen advertised some supplements that are supposed to add that deeper gold to the palomino coat. Anyone had any success--or tried any that failed? Thanks, Julie

Hi Julie - there is a product marketed here in New Zealand called Black Magic which is used to stop the black coat fading in summer and also has coat enhancers for other colours including golden. Not sure who markets it, but could be worth googling to see if it is marketed under the same name over your way

Hi Julie,
Have you used a summer weight turn out sheet to prevent her from fading? Here, the horses have just started shedding their summer coats, so it may be perfect timing to protect the new hair as it comes in.

Julie you can ship her to me. I love palominos...even faded ones.

I wonder if being a yearling has anything to do with it? I bought a yearling palomino years ago and she was light also. When she hit her second summer she was a beautiful golden, dappled palomino and didn't fade much. When I got her she was very under nourished, if she turned sideways you couldn't see her thin, so maybe nutrition in general came into play there.

I tried Blackenall from www.horsetech.com on my faded bay arab gelding this year and it DID work, I don't know if it would work on a palomino or not

Paprika is thought to darken the coat of horses. We have several discussions on this and you will find some very avid paprika fans. Run a search we were discussing this recently.

Hi Julie, we have three palominos, one very pale color and one golden and one chocolate palomino. The one thing I have found to darken them is Gold as Sun. It is specifically for palominos and it works great. I too, didn't want to leave them stalled during the day but the sun would really bleach them out. I can't remember exactly who makes this but they have several different supplements specifically for color. I know they carry Black as Knight and Gold As Sun. It isn't very expensive and is surely worth a try! I will see if I can find out who makes this supplement.

Cheval International is the company who makes Gold as Sun. It shouldn't be hard to find. I used to order the big buckets, but now we use SmartPak Equine supplements and they pack it in daily doses.

Thanks all, Julie I'll order the Gold as Sun and as Fran says the timing is right to experiment. I also bought some paprika at the bulk food store for about $2.60 a pound which is way less than the Black as Knight supplement. As long as we're experimenting, I'll try it on my black and white paint. He's in my profile. That's a spring picture and by July he's fading. I'll take before and after pictures for all of us. Fran, the filly's out with two other yearlings and they think a blanket is made to be shredded! I hope you're right about the age thing Diane, her older siblings and her sire are truly golden! I showed her a map to your place and she thinks I better pack her a lunch before sending her off! You would love her, she's as mellow as Hank is umm, un-mellow! She is very laid back! Thanks all, we'll see what happens. Sadly no double blind, peer reviewed research so we just have to do our own. Maybe Dr. O will publish!!
