I was recently told that the NSCs in stored hay will increase over time. Is this true? Are there any studies that have been done to prove or disprove this? |

You would think this would be a well answered question but I cannot find a definitive answer. What is documented is a significant decrease in NSC's when first cut and baled. I agree with Diane that NSC's are most likely to decrease with storage, do to oxidation of the sugars, but I do wonder if there is an increase in non digestible sugars like fructosamine which are partially responsible for some of the laminitis cases. This is less clear but I do not think a significant problem. DrO |
