My horse does not like to drink the water from my trailer storage tank. I refresh it frequently, but still does not seem to make a difference. I would prefer he drink from my water vs. a community watering area. Any suggestions???

Many folks add apple juice, kool-aid, etc, to the water to make it more palatable for picky horses.

Usually this works best by tainting the water with a acceptable flavor at home and once the horse adapts to it you do this away from home. The flavoring hides "background" flavors. Of course if he is bananas over apple juice it may work at anytime.

When recently at Parelli training for a week, they had two tanks of water. One was very dark-colored and many assumed immediately it was dirty water. However, it was molasses water. Because they are on the road so much and water flavors vary greatly, by doing as Dr. O says and adding some flavoring at home, they will then accept that flavor and drink enough when traveling. I don't know how much molasses they add, but enough to darken the color substantially.

we use vinager, a very small amount in the water at home to help control flies, and then when traveling we add vinager to the storage tanks on the horse trailer. my horses dont mind the taste at all which suprises me.

You know, I have heard that organic unfiltered apple cidar vinegar is great for all sorts of animals. I give my birds some in their water and my dogs too. The birds have done really well on it. I wonder if that would work in the water as opposed to regular vinegar? Would be great to have the benefits of the apple cidar stuff too.

Yes, that is what we use, i also use it for my dogs, living out in the country i have a severe problem with flies so i do whatever i can to eliminate the problem. it seems to have cut down a bit on the amount of flies i have since starting it 2 year ago. both with the dogs (hounds) and horses. and the wonderful side effect is the fact that the horses or dogs will drink water on the road.

JoDeen,
How much do you use per gallon?

Well when on the road i use about 1/4 to 1/2 cup per gallon. At home i just dump it in the big water tank, when we travel two of the hounds go with us and we use the same water for them. The whole reason I started the vinager was for the fly issue, but I can tell you that no matter where we go, I never have a problem with any of my 7 horses drinking.
