We had an addition to our herd this past winter to give us three horses. Our 2 acre pasture needless to say was not adequate so all summer I asked my husband to fence in the additional acre that we have for more pasture, but as you all know it sometimes takes a long time for our significant others to get to the task. Well, it's October now and I finally have the fence. My question is can I put my horses on the lush pasture w/o gradual introduction this late in the season? They are on the current pasture 24/7, but are only nibbling.

Hi Angela, that is a hard question. I guess in general most horses would be ok, but if you have the piggy type I would worry about colic or founder.

I see you are from Il. I am too and the pastures are really going through the fall flush now. Mine are also on an eaten down pasture. I know if I let mine out in a nice, tall, lush pasture without first introducing them, at least one would founder or colic...but that's just my luck!

Can you let them out for a few hours over the weekend and see how it goes?
