Hi Dr. O.,

A few days ago my vet gave me an EHV-1 shot to give to my race mare. She needed to have her vaccination updated 1) because there was an outbreak in Delaware causing two horses to have to be euthanized, so as usual everyone is getting all panicked and all the racing jurisdictions are requiring updated vaccinations. 2) she was due.

Anyway, my question is he drew up the shot 2 days ago and gave it to me. I asked him if it needed to be refrigerated and he told me it was cold enough in the barn and was ok. I had intended to give her the shot that night, but didn't because she did not come in due to the horrendous weather ( she was better off outside in her run in shed).

I want to give the the shot today, since she is now in the barn. The temp has not gone above freezing on any of the past two days ( so in effect the shot has remained refrigerated). Do you think it is still ok to give and what if it was frozen at sometime in the last few days ( outside temps at one point was sixteen degrees. In the barn was probably a bit higher although not above freezing.

Thanks
Rachelle

Rachelle, it is the freezing that concerns me it is specifically listed as a no-no for most vaccines. You should call your vet for recommendations however as he has the branding information.
