I have wormed my new mare according to instructions in the article about worming a horse with a possible heavy worm load. I kept her in a stall so I could collect and dispose of her manure. It is -15 so I would imagine if there were wormies in the manure they would have frozen but it they are there would I be able to see their frozen bods? thanks.

Lori, years ago my friend bought 2 weanlings, if I recall they were around 8 mos. old and came from a less then desirable place. When she asked the vet about worming them he said to go ahead and use Ivermectin. I told her I don't think I would do that and would give them half a dose of strongid, and work my way up in case of heavy worm load. I think it was the next day or maybe a couple days and it looked like those weanlings had spaghetti poop...they were loaded with round worms and yes they were very visible (yuck). Those suckers get BIG. I suppose it would depend on how much of a worm burden she has and what kind of worms...not all are so visible. My friend then put them on daily strongid, then wormed them with ivermectin a month or so later. No worms appeared after the first couple days.

As Diane says it will depend on the size of the worm and how many there are. For a description on what the worms look like Lori, see the articles Diseases of Horses » Colic, Diarrhea, GI Tract » Parasites and Worms. DrO
