Posted on Saturday, Apr 25, 2009 - 11:13 am: So Punky has some reaction going on.I am waiting to see how it resolves, to see if its Onchondia or culicoide. I wormed her with Ivermectin 2 weeks ago about a week afterwards I noticed a ping pong ball size swelling in her belly button area and a smaller one a few inches up. She has had umbilical mesh surgery a few years ago so its kinda hard to feel the swelling cuz of the scar tissue. But I did use DrO swelling swelling distinguishing info and I think it is non- inflam. non- painful. no heat. It has gone from a roundish swelling on the middline to a 10 inch long on the mid line. Temp is fine. It is a tiny bit weepy so I sprayed it with deep words off last night to keep the flies off. In the meantime I wanna get her a sheet. We live on a lake so I cant get rid of the standing water. One thing that makes me wonder it its a culcoide sensitivity is that she has been wormed with Ivermectin most of her life.. So anyways,I am going to get her a fly sheet. Anyone have luck with the Saxon bellyband sheet? She is pretty easy going on her sheets. Sorry about the rambling blah, blah blah's. Thanks for any suggestions Leslie |

The biggest reason is shear laziness tho, after I thought about it do you leave the sheet on 24/7, you would almost have to to protect from the biting gnats. AND if not the thought of putting on 3 fly sheets before going to work was a bit of a put off! ANYWAY as I was looking for fly sheets I ran across these, they would be cool and not as easy to destroy. I have the quiet ride mask and love it...so does Hank! https://www.cashelcompany.com/ProductDetails.aspx?C=1&SC=6&ProductID=9552 |

Posted on Saturday, Apr 25, 2009 - 12:48 pm: Hi Leslie, my one experience w/belly band sheets was the full-neck bucas buzz-off. The problem I had was that the belly band was not adjustable enough for my guy (who is hard to fit, being broad for his length, evidently, so that sheets are a little long if they fit his width). The belly band didn't fit snugly and I hadn't thought through all the implications. I came home from work one night to find he had snagged the belly band on something, and pulled until it broke. He somehow had the whole thing pulled over his head, attached to him only by the elastic neck band, like a big apron! Fortunately for us both, he is very, very calm and therefore wasn't injured. I still love the sheet but use the belly band piece for repairs. The cashel co. belly guard looks good in that sense, though. And Diane, once I am sure the sheet isn't causing rubs, I do leave them on 24/7. Flies & gnats may sleep at night, but the mosquitos are out! I try to take them off and rinse them at least once a week, if not twice. |

I JUST know when I'm not looking someone, somehow would get hung up.My horse don't seem to be bothered by mosquitos, not that they don't bite them, but I never see any reactions...those gnats tho!! They are worse in the evening hours. The horses ears and bellies are crawling with them. Swat alleviates that problem quite well. |

So if you ever get really mad at him you can put him in a belly guard and a grass muzzle Talk about enhanced torture techniques Pumpkin seems to be doing better, as of today, with the sheet I got her. But I think I will try the swat on her midline. If the flysheet ends up not working I think I will look into the belly guard on her. So, do these midges last all summer or? |

Posted on Saturday, May 2, 2009 - 9:10 am: Hank would probably think he was very special if I put one of them on him.Honestly the swat works as well as anything...I go through about 2 jars through the summer, at the cost of about $16 can't go wrong. I don't know about where you live but here those things are her Apr.-Oct. With the summer mos. being the worst! |

Posted on Saturday, May 2, 2009 - 1:04 pm: Same here, April - October. I hate them!! Though 'out west' they are called no-see-ums. I don't know if they are a different strain of insect than I experienced back east but the ones here bite people too. For something so small they feel like they have wolf sized teeth!I tried swat last summer and it seemed to help in that the swishing stomping fussing would stop after I put it on, but the tail rubbing continued. My guess is because the allergic reaction was already underway? It seems with my mare once the itching starts there is no stopping it. Glad the sheet is helping Pumpkin, you both have my sympathies! |

Posted on Sunday, May 3, 2009 - 5:12 pm: Thanks DrO;)She is doing better with her sheet. since moving out east, its been one skin thing after another with her. my vet is coming out tuesday to pull a coggins on her and I will have him take a peek at her too. It originally scared me alot as the swelling was right where her old hernia scar is. I immedieately thought 'oh no! she torn it open, somehow' but its not. thank goodness. cheers leslie |
