I live in NC and the flies right now are horrible. My poor horses are suffering and I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with the Fly Collars. I have not heard anything about these. I was shopping for some fly masks and ran across these. Can anyone give me their experience with these? |

I haven't tried them but I hear that other horses like to pull them off. I'm wondering if anyone's tried one of those Ultrasonic Repellent thingys--again other horses would probably like to remove it for you, but it may work attached to the saddle while riding or in the stall-? |

I have had friends use the fly collars and leg bands with success. They told me that they are generally effective for about 2 weeks. I have also been told that they lose their effect if they are exposed to a lot of rain or water. |

I tried them when they first came out, and my horses just took them off each other. If you duct taped them on so they'd stay they'd be good. I wound up using them when riding, and used fly masks, wipes, etc. the rest of the time. |

I think if you put duct tape over the whole collar it may quit working. If you just do the latch I think they still could be torn or chewed off. I do have some concerns with the oral exposure that such collars can cause. Though I have not seen a review of this particular ultrasonic product there have been dozens tested for other uses and in general ultrasonic insect repellent devices are not effective. DrO |

I just recently tried the leg bands. After about a week, I took them off before bathing her and noticed she had some type of reaction where the bands were. I also noticed earlier that she would try to pull them off. I didn't put them back on. |

I have used the neck bands and leg bands for the biting flies and gnats that had my mares legs eaten up. They both worked well for about 2-4 weeks depending on the amount of rain/water which decreases their potency. Same problem as most things we put on them though...a buddy can remove them easily. One idea once ripped is to use double sided velcro and re-use once their pal removes it for you. |
