Dr. O., I have read the article, and it gives good info on what is needed by whom and when, but it doesnt' give a list of recommended products and combinations. I am starting to do this myself, and want to give the best to my horses. If a combo is bad, I plan on giving everything separately. What do YOU do with your show horses? Alicia |

Hello Alicia, I was reviewing posts for the newsletter when I can across this post, that slipped through the cracks. I use combination vaccines but separate out the respiratory vaccines from the tetanus and encephalitis vaccines, which I give together. For particulars on which vaccines I give for which situations see, Care for Horses » Vaccines & Coggin's Test » Vaccine Schedules. DrO |

So, I need to give flu, EVH 1 and 4, and west nile in November. First question, would you do a booster of WN if the horse was vaccinated in early May? I live in Maryland, and our frosts usually start in November. I think they were vaccinated with Fort Dodge for West Nile. My plan is to use Calvenza for EHV1 and 4 and flu types A1 and A2. It is intra nasal and has all the flu and rhino stuff I need. So, is doing the Calvenza and a shot of west nile at the same time a bad idea? Or, do I even need the west nile? Alicia |

The article on Vaccine Overview gives the pros and cons of once vs twice yearly but there is no reason the intranasal products cannot be given at the same time as the injections. DrO |

Dr. O., I have another question. I know you don't recommend Potomac. There are two rabies potomac combo vaccines. Would you give the straight rabies or the combo. West Jett has never had the rabies or the potomac vaccines. Looks like he will need Calvenza and rabies as soon as he settles down enough. I will then give him Strangles after a few more weeks and the Calvenza booster. Then he will be due for EWT and West Nile in the spring. Which brand rabies do you recommend? Alicia |

Any rabies vaccine approved for use in horses would be fine. I would not give the PHF vaccine as I still can find no verification of efficacy in the scientific literature. DrO |

Is there a special loading dose of any of these? I know I have to give intramuscular first with the Calvenza then an intranasal three weeks later for the flu rhino. I also see that I need to do the same with Strangles. I hope both those can be intranasal. Does rabies need two close together for initial immunity as well? OK, this is more for me, but here is what I think I need to do. Let West Jett settle in for 10 days. Give him intramuscular Calvenza flu/rhino, intranasal strangles, and rabies the same day. Three weeks later give him intranasal Calvenza and Strangles. Is this right? And should I give him all those the same days or a few weeks apart (the strangles is my main worry). Alicia |

You follow the directions that come with the vaccines Alicia as different products may have different directions or even the same product may change it directions as it changes formulations or newer research is done. DrO |
