I recently took in three jennet donkeys, a mom and her two year old and four year old daughters, to the rescue. One of the youngsters has presented a pink "bubble" coming out of her vulva. It usually happens when she is nervous which is whenever I come into the paddock area. They had not been handled much before we got them. She most often defecates onto this "bubble". Is the bubble her clitoris? I "think" I had read that it is somwhere, but danged if I can find the information now. If it is, is it normal for it to protrude? I worry about infection if she gets fecal matter on it, then pulls it back in. If it is normal I will relax, if not, what do I do???

Thank you in advance Dr. O and/or anyone who may be able to shed some light on this for me.

Ann

Hello Ann,
No I don't think you are describing the clitoris which is a fleshy often pigmented structure in the ventral portion of the vulva. However there are several possibilities from your description.

If this happens intermittently and the jenny has never bred before I think it most likely she has a complete and intact hymen that gets expressed out the vulva when abdominal pressure creates a high pressure situation on the inside of the hymen wall causing it to "balloon" out.

I have also often seen trauma to the vaginal wall cause a large pendulant pocket of edema protrude out the vulva. I have never heard of intermittent uterine prolapse but consider it a possibility if the hymen is not intact. There are other possibilities.

Fecal contamination of the reproductive tract has the potential to set up a acute to chronic mastitis. So I think you have this examined to determine if this is correctable. If it is the hymen simple manual rupture will prevent it from ballooning out as it will not trap pressure behind it anymore.
