I would like to keep Skeeter out in pasture as much as possible so he doesnt crib my stalls. The pasture has no protection from elements. I also would like to ride him alot this winter. And not spend hours cooling him out.
So my plan is to high trace clip and blanket with a rug. Should I wait to clip and start rugging him or do it now? I never understand when to do that. My hope is a rug will be enough for him to stay out most of the winter. maybe I shouldnt clip him?
Thanks for any insight

I am clipping now and layer with rugs as the weather calls for it.

It is my experience that it stays short but still seems to get thick if I blanket only.
Also, by clipping now it is long enough to provide warmth by the end of Jan/Feb to reduce blankets if you choose to give a riding break at that time.

Like Lori, I usually try to clip around this time (although I haven't got to it yet due to a lot of rain and a very dirty horse every day). I find that if I clip by end of October, enough hair grows back by the really cold months that my mare is protected enough (with a heavy blanket) to not worry about the elements.

I always leave the bottom belly hair also.
Even with a bellyband blanket that area is exposed and of course it comes into contact with the ground when the horse is lying down.
