Could someone please tell me if I did an adequate job of cleaning my gelding's sheath. From reading all the posts I was expecting to have to insert my arm up to the elbow but could only get my hand in as far as my wrist. My boy stayed fully dropped during the entire procedure. Could this account for the shallow cavity?

Reba, I know when I clean Hanks sheath and he is hanging out I can't go in near as far as when it is inside. I find as far as cleaning inside his sheath I do a better job when his penis is in. JME

You must have the touch Reba! My boys drop and I do the "bean" first, then they reel it all in. I'm not to my elbow, but mid forearm while cleaning the sheath. Perhaps my boys are under endowed?

Hello Reba,
The space between the sheath and penis when it is withdrawn could be called a "fornix". While the penis is being dropped the fornix shallows out and when fully distended there is no fornix. The skin lining the fornix "folds out" as the penis distends.

The way you know you got to the bottom is did you feel the bottom? The bean is a little trickier however and many need to be shown where it is hiding.

Thank you Dr. O. And yes I reached the bottom. I am going to search for the bean again. I know where it is located, probably just did not insert my finger far enough.

If you are having trouble getting your horse to drop try this. Have your horse lower his head (this is very easily taught). Stand completely relaxed by his side and sigh deeply, several times. Continue to take deep bored breaths like you have all the time in the world while slowly stroking his underbelly just in front of his sheath. He should become totally relaxed and drop.
