Posted on Wednesday, Feb 17, 2010 - 11:09 am: DrO,I did the ivermectin 2 years in a row (It's cheapest ;-)) and I thought instead of doing the the Quest year, I would do the daily Pyrantel year. My horses are exposed to more manure I feel using my Paddock Paradise track system so I think I need to up my deworming program a bit. I did the last ivermectin this month; should I do a Quest Plus and start the daily right after that? Or just start the daily pellets and do the ivermectin with praziquantel according to the first year directions under "Adults on Heavily Contaminated Pastures." Or, option 2, do 1 or 2 wormings of Quest Plus and then start the daily over the summer months? That was my original plan but of course the more I read the more I wonder what is the best course of action! And no, I won't be running fecals. Thank you! |

One horse would be different but when you have 3 or 4 like you do I would figure out the cost first, and you want to give them the Full dose or it is not going to work... no cheating down or you could get resistance. That said I de-wormed mine with equimax (ivermectin+prazi) and started the daily the next day. The idea is to clean them out with the ivermectim plus then start the daily immediately so any worms they pick up are eliminated..thus keeping them clean. I will say I wasn't real impressed with what my horses looked like on the daily and a further fecal showed Sam had a pretty heavy burden of stongylydes (whether that is because of his CD I'm not sure) Flash and Hank were OK. |

It was sticker shock! In the past, I've just fed it over the summer months, although according to DrO it's the sun that kills worms in manure, so maybe that is the wrong way to go about it, huh? I think I had 6 horses the last time I did the daily, and I think I went through a bucket a month! I may just do my Quest year; I am going to order this weekend after our tax refund goes into checking! Why do the horses always benefit from that, lol! Funny how Sam didn't test free of worms. |

This is in response to the growing resistance of ascarids (roundworms and pinworms) to avermectin's. The schedule article has a routine to follow if you are not doing fecals however all my clients who have used the past deworming programs save significant amounts doing fecals as often there worm burden remains low to none for some time. At that time we took him off daily wormer. I put him back on it 5 days ago. I also wormed him with Zimectrin Gold. The trainer suggested Safeguard Power Dose AFTER I gave him the zimectrin. Ooops! Is it too late? Can I worm him with Safeguard now? |

You will get more responses if you start your own discussion rather than post at the bottom on another member's discussion. Each discussion is "owned" by the original poster and all replies in that discussion should either directly or indirectly address the concerns of the original poster. To start your own discussion back up one page using the navigation bar at the top of this page. This will be a Article Page on this topic. Below the article you will find a list of already existing discussions on this topic. Under this list you will find the "Start New Discussion" button. This is a good topic on your subject so you should first review the article as it will have important information on your subject. Next check the titles of the already existing discussions to see if your question has already been answered. If your question remains unanswered, now is the time to Start a New Discussion. Select a short title that describes your specific concern. A title like "Help!!!" does not help others find your specific topic. Instead something like "Ace for Colic?" allows others to rapidly and understand what your topic is about just by viewing the title. This is likely to bring more responses from those with some experience with your topic and allows members to find answers to their questions quicker. |
