Hello DrO, hope this finds you well.

I recently bought a very large ISH that I would like to worm using your unknown history method.. I got him from a rescue. He is skinny, probably a 3 on henneke. He is a true 17'3+ hands. I used my weight tape on him and it doesnt go all the way around. So he is pass the 1321 pound mark by 3 inches. So I am guessing he is under 1500 pounds. Anyways, I was considering dosing him with Ivermectin at 800lbs, for this first worming. Sound ok?
Thanks
leslie

Hello leslie,
Yes if you feel the horse is debilitated and possibly very wormy you could start with about a half dose and if well tolerated follow up with a whole dose. Alternatively a whole dose of a non-larvicidal dewormer like Strongid followed several weeks later by a ivermectin/praziquantel product is fairly safe also.
