Dr. O, can you tell me....How important is the time (maximum ) between taking the sample of fecal and delivering it to the laboratory . Should the sample be kept cool (refrigerated ) . Thank you, AM.

It is absolutely critical that the fecal sample be gotten to the lab before the parasite eggs hatch. This time can be very variable depending on specie, temperature, and humidity. Refrigeration will slow the hatching down substantially. Because of all these variables and lack of research it is hard to pinpoint exactly how much time can pass but at room temperature 2 to 3 days is probably safe and refrigerated at 40 degrees you may have several weeks. The bottom line is that fecals are best run on fresh stool samples and done in the next 24 to 48 hours. If that is not possible the samples should be quickly refrigerated until they can be looked at. Dr.O, apologies for my late answer/thanks. My computer didn't show your answer . I already have results - fecal are clean. Our dog Vet told me, I should collect three days in a row - that gives most accurate result. AM.

Hmmm...I have never felt the need to do 3 days sampling for rounds or strongyles. This may improve the detection of tapes however if you have reason to suspect them but get negatives. For more on this see the article on tapeworms. DrO

Thank you, - I did read the articles and I don't think they have tapeworms. They did have strongyles - I did double deworming then within a period of 21 days . It was in December/January . Dr. O. AGAIN , I do not get your email as I used to . I have seen your / this latest answer on the "todays discussions ". We have so much trouble with the site of HA ! We cannot edit Credit info, pay subscriptions and I am not receiving daily emails - marked as unread..... As I said above, I must open "todays discussions" .

About getting HA to work as it used to: I have found that every time I close my browser, I have to log out from HA first and then log back in when I open the browser again. I am allowing cookies, so I don't think that is the problem. I know you have worked this very hard, DrO, so I have not been emailing about the problem anymore. Lilo
