My foal is now 7 wks old. When he was 1 week old I dewormed his mother with ivermectin. Asked my vet about deworming and he said to do a dose of strongid paste for 200lbs. Then I read your article on deworming which starts out with ivermectin. Would you please help me understand the difference between the two procedures? Should I do the mother with Strongid and baby with ivermectin? Many thanks!

Hmmm, Not sure about using different than momma's but would be interested in what DrO says. Did you measure your baby's heart girth with a height/weight measuring tape? May not be exactly accurate but close. Be sure to give as accurate a dose as possible, you don't want to overdose them. I rotate and split the tube between babies, whatever dose is appropriate for their weight. I used Equimax this time. So far so good.

Hello 4jane, The two procedures would be the same as both products are orally administered paste. The article associated with this discussion area gives our recommendations for deworming foals but many programs can work the important thing is to monitor response with regular fecal float exams. As to the differences between these two products see HorseAdvice.com » Treatments and Medications for Horses » Dewormers (Anthelminics). For a complete description of these two products see HorseAdvice.com » Treatments and Medications for Horses » Dewormers (Anthelminics). DrO

Thanks Andrea and Dr. O, No I do not have a tape measure the vet just looked at him and said to dose him for 200lbs. I have never done that before. He is my first and most likely only baby! The pyrantel and oxibendazole (Anthelcide®) are different names but both will treat the same worm populations, correct? Since I treated momma with ivermectin 6 weeks ago should I fore go treating baby with Ivermectin first and start them both on the strongid paste now and then alternate back to the ivermectin after? Thanks

Not necessarily though both are labeled for the same worms, parasite resistance could make one product more effective than the other. It does not matter the mare was previously treated with ivermectin, it would still be OK for the foal. DrO
