One of my horses front hooves sounds "hollow" when tapped. What could cause this and should I be concerned?

Is it the wall or the sole that sounds hollow, Jenifer?

It is the wall. One sounds solid while the other hollow.

Welcome Jenifer,
Last horse I saw with a hollow sounding wall when tapped had white line disease, see Equine Diseases » Lameness » Diseases of the Hoof » White Line Disease or Onchyomycosis.

NCAT,
You can start a new discussion by clicking on "Start New Discussion" at the bottom of this post. I don't think your problem is "hollow hooves." Do you do your own trimming? A good farrier who understands barefoot trims/natural trims, will be able to help. If you want to learn on your own, you can get Pete Ramey's book, "How to Make Natural Trimming Work for You" (at least, I think that's the name . . . I packed all of my horse books for a move). If the edges of the hooves are rasped from the top to round them, and from the bottom to roll them a little, then, you will have a "mustang roll" on your horse's feet and you will have less chipping. Try that first. If they still chip, maybe your horse needs a supplement like Biotin (Farrier's Formula is supposed to be good) to strengthen them.
