my 22 year old mare i think is having a reaction to the vaccines. She was vacinated on saturday mid day and today is seriously not right.

My vet gave WNV/eee/wee, tetanus, rabies, flue/rhino.

I wormed her the thursday before with quest. (don't know if that is pertinent or not)

She isn't one to get a reaction normally over the years. slight depression and inactivity for a day. But now wonder if her age and lack of exercise and overweightness are making this worse. And in the future not give her all these vaccs at one time. Or ever again.

She is acting like a foundered horse. But no heat in the swollen areas. Back legs are the worst. Some swelling in the front. she slowly walks around like it hurts to move her hind end. She will pick up her legs. and they are not hot. she is eating fine. Last night droopy lip and wouldn' t move at all. i've been hosing her down but its not dissipating. My vet hasn't called me back yet, so i don't want to give her bute.

Should i not vaccinate in the future all at once? Will that help in not having a reaction. or not having it so bad? is it one particular vac vs. others?

On another note. I read the articles and some old posts. I do have nightshade in the area. Dr. O you wrote that this could cause problems too. Does the horse have to come in touching contact with the nightshade for it to create a problem? I don't think she can physically get to it, ast its on the other side of the fenceline near the ponds edge.
thanks,
joj

Hello joj,
yes nightshade is a problem but this reaction sounds more like typical neck soreness though a little worse than most. For more on symptoms, treatment, and prevention see the article associated with this forum. Until you experiment it is hard to know if separating will decrease the reaction or just result in two reactions and which vaccine it might be.

Thanks! for future knowledge does the nightshade pose a problem as an airborne thing? I think i read it was a problem with a particular wormer and nightshade together. Right? or all wormer products. I know this isn't what her problem is. But, i constantly worry about the weeds and toxins. I'm pretty sure this episode is vaccine oriented.

She is no better tonight. i gave 2 grams of bute but darnit if she knows the smell and won't eat the grain that has the bute on it. picky girl.

She is Still walking in slow motion. very sad to watch her in pain. This makes me mad. and think twice about vaccinating her again. Every year it seems to get worse. Last year i had 3 days of droopy depression. This year she can barely walk.

Sorry but i just need to vent i guess...

The nightshade problem is with eating it joj. You don't need to vent you need to get some bute in the horse so she will feel better. You can make a paste with tablets and yogurt or molasses or peanut butter or get some paste from your vet.

I have problems with this in some horses, I have learned when they start having this problem you need to separate vaccines, bute before, and only choose those that are life threatening.
Get a dose syringe and grind it then add whatever makes it flow well out of the syringe so you can do it fast. Pudding consistency works good because it doesn't roll out of their mouth.
Good luck
