I am hoping that someone can help me. I went to dump a bag of feed in our storage container and did not notice. Made my boys buckets and there were bunches of weevils and a very few worms of some type in their buckets that were trying to escape. Needless to say, the entire 50lbs got trashed, their buckets got trashed as well. Opened another 50lbs and that was ok, I saw nothing. I called the feed store this AM, that makes the feed and delivers it for my boys, he said that they all hatched due to the weather and that they would come spray our barn and replace all the feed to ensure that next year this infestation will not happen again. We have had many days over 100 degrees here in NC and he said that is why the eggs hatched. Has anyone else ever had this problem and are these dangerous to the horses if there were some that they ate from maybe another bag that could have had fewer and I did not notice them? Help - it now scares me to think my boys ate bugs that can hurt them. YUCK  |

The worms you see are the larval form of the bugs. I am uncertain about what the feed supplier is saying and if I understand the situation right, this is not a current or future problem with your premises. If your feed is well stored they will gradually leave.
The meal bugs came in with the feed and suggest that storage of the feed or its grain components may have been less than optimal at some point. Other than suggesting storage problems the bugs are not dangerous nor do they carry any disease I am aware of.
