How long can a stalled horse go without food before developing ulcers? My horse in currently on Gastro gard and is turned out in pasture for 11 hours. He comes in at night and gets his last flake of hay at 9pm and is fed and turned out at 6:30 every morning. I want to ensure he does not develop new ulcers after treatment is complete but I am reluctant to give him "free choice" hay as he is an easy keeper and will get HUGE.

Welcome Cynthia,
There is no such known "time" and some horses will manage without hay a half day just fine. That said it is better to allow a horse to eat free choice. Perhaps good hay during the night with a grazing muzzle during the day could successfully manage your easy keeper. We have had very good results managing easy keepers using muzzles.

Thank you for your advice. How many flakes would you consider to be "free choice" for an overnight 9 hour stint? I am only asking this question because I can't imagine giving him one flake per hour or so which is how long it takes him to consume one.

I would start with about 10 lbs over a 12 hour period. You can add and subtract as needed. You want to adjust to where it just is all cleaned up by turn out time.
