I have a 25 yr old THB (retired race). He injured his tendons at age 6 and was retired. I have had him for about a year and he needed to gain weight when I got him. From the time I got him until this June I fed him the same amount of grain. He gained the needed weight. He does get forage. I decreased the amount of grain during the summer. He was getting 1 and 1/2 coffee cans (11 oz.)of Purina Equine Senior and 1 and 1/2 cans (11 oz.) of Horse Chow. I decreased 1/2 can of Senior Equine during the summer. With winter coming I don't want him to become underweight again, so over the course of a week and a half I increased gradually back up to the amount he had been on. I also have been giving him pasture time. He had been on 1 hr pasture every few days. He is now getting 2hrs per day. He also gets 6 flakes of hay per day. Question: He seems that he is getting more feisty now. FYI He has had changes. He was just moved to my home and he now has a goat companion. He is in a small paddock due to his tendon injury acting up. Should I continue the same amount of feed or should I decrease it. I don't want him to go backwards with his recovery of lameness. He has been lame since June. |

Decreasing the grain will likely calm him out a bit but cooler weather and windy conditions might also be responsible. DrO |
