Just found a wonderful horse in Northern California, just outside of Marysville, and will need to find a trustworthy vet to perform a full prepurchase exam. My vet didn't know anyone, and suggested I look into equine hospitals, but there don't seem to be any in the area? How has anyone here handled that in the past? Any advice? Also, I'll need to ship this 18 year old mare (a dressage schoolmaster) to San Diego, which is probably 500 miles away. Any advice on choosing a shipper? Any pitfalls to look out for? I've always bought my horses locally, so this is an entirely new experience for me. Any and all help appreciated.

Gay-- Dr. O just helped me with the Vet part of your question. See my post per his reference. Another idea is to talk to your current vet that you use locally. He/she may be able to help by pointing you to some of the professional associations.

In terms of the shipping end of things, one of the best things to do is to call some professional dressage riders in FL, GA, NC or VA. They ship their horses everywhere, even overseas, and one of them may be able to help with the name of a shipper that can address the special needs of this horse. You can start in NC by getting hold of the Dressage Association for that state. Also check with the association in San Diego. Or try calling a large breeding operation like Iron Spring Farms.
