Dr O -- we switched from round bales to square bales this year. I have 4 geldings who are moderately worked. Most of my friends feed 2 X a day - 12 hours apart. I am trying to set up my schedule that will best suit my horses but also make it easy for a caretaker if I have to go away for a day, weekend or longer. I am struggling because I would prefer to feed 3 X a day -- is it stressful on a horse to only get fed 2 times? they are in a dirt paddock Oct - April, so no pasture to speak of. Thanks!

Hello DC,
It depends on how much you are feeding DC. The article Overview of Nutrition discusses how forages and concentrates should be fed, including the maximum amount of concentrate that should be fed at one time. In general the more divided the feedings the better for a number of reasons but as you state you have to temper this with a practical schedule.

Thanks Dr O.,
I am feeding 15-20 lbs per day, per horse. Plus, just a cup of Nutrina prime to mix in their suppliments. (sel/e, probiotic, sand clear and mult vitamin - at various times of the week/month).
Denise
