My husband had planned to buy bags of what was called "horse mix" at the local co-op to plant and begin our new pasture. When he got there the bags were all sold and he picked up seed bags of alfalfa and clover mix. He also bought some bags of other grasses mixes to add. Is this going to be a good mix for the horses? We are new at this and need any info you can provide....thanks. |

Advice on planting really is region specific and I highly recommend you get in touch with your local extension service as the investment in money and more importantly time is huge. Imagine trying to establish this pasture for a year only to find you have made poor choices. In general alfalfa will not stand up to moderate horse traffic. As Marlane stated, most areas do best with a perennial grass mixed with clover. We have an extension service locator in The Care menu that is available to visitors and members. The grass seed is good as long as you have some perennial or permanent seed. The clover and alfalfa would be ok in small quantities as too much is too rich for horses and can contribute to founder and other problems. |
