Does anyone have experience with steaming hay? I have heard from several sources that it's better for heavey horses than merely soaking the hay (assuming that switching the horse to a complete feed is not necessary an easy alternative). How is it done correctly? Why is it better than soaking? On the advice of my hay man, I went out, got a huge plastic garbage bin, put a couple of sticks at the bottom to keep the hay out of the water. I pour boiling water over the hay. I cover the garbage bin with a plastic garbage bag, and then the lid and leave it for a minimum of three hours.... I'm not completely convinced that I'm doing it properly as some of the hay seems no better than feeding dry hay. Maybe I need to use more water (I was told 1 kettle full, but I'm using two...). If anyone else out there does this and finds that it helps, please let me know the how and why....Also, does it still work if the hay ends up freezing (it's pretty cold down here at nights now (-20))....BRRRRRR.... Thanks! |

Hello Sheila, I know of no work to support or deny the thought. Neither can I figure why it might be better unless it cooks and therefore changes the mold spores? DrO |
