Hi Dr O!
It's me again, with my fat broodmare. She is now due for her last, 9 month, vax. After her first one, 5 mnths, she had no reaction, but after her 2nd one, 7 mnths, she had a pretty severe reaction. I thought she was going to keel over. She is a very sensitive girl (besides being a pig)
and I found her the day after the shot, head hanging low and it seemed every part of her body hurt. She didn't want to move. She also had swelling at the injection site. My vet said to give her some banamine before and after the 9 month vax. I am afraid she will have an even more severe reaction. Also, a new horse came to the barn in October and was treated for a Resp. virus. My horse had no physical contact with this horse but they are stable directly across a 12 ft aisle from one another.
So....do you think it's safe to vax her per my vets instructions? (I forgot to mention to her about the sick new horse in Oct)

As long as fever and soreness were the only reactions bute or Banamine will probably prevent the reactions. Neither are approved for use in the pregnant mare but are used frequently with very few side effects. But no one can be sure.
Then on the other hand there does sound there is significant risk for Herpes virus exposure. I believe I would take the risk but am not strong in this recommendation: either course can cause problems and my crystal ball is broke. If you do it be sure a 1 and 1/2 inch needle is used and perhaps move the injection site to the back of the thigh. Begin bute before and continue it for the time span she was sore last time.

I too gave both my broodmares their 2nd Pneumabort shot 1.5 weeks ago. BOTH mares had what I call severe reation. Both swelled very big at injection site being warm to the touch. One even stopped eating for a couple days. I had a hard time keeping them on their feet. They wanted to lay down. Per my vet's instructions I gave 2 grams bute daily for 3 days which seemed to help. He said my site for injections wasn't exactly in the best place, a little too high on the neck. Could this be the problem? These same mare were bred last year & I also gave all shots to them with no reaction at all. |

Are you cautious about giving her the vax because of her potential exposure or her reaction (or both)? Could the sick horse's vet tell me what virus she thinks the horse had? It was a cough that lingered, the vet had to come back and treat this colt a few times. He arrived seemingly healthy and started coughing after about a week.
This is tough...damned if you do, damned if you don't! (pardon the expression)

Dan, possibly too high be sure to review your whole technique.
Barbara, I am cautious about her potential for reaction. Though these type reations are pretty common, I would say about 5%, and rarely become anything more that stiffness and fever it may be the harbinger of more severe reactions (see : Equine Diseases: Respiratory System: Anaphylactic Shock). I have never had a severe reaction to an injection with this product.

Just An FYI, I gave her the shot this AM. I kept an eye on her for a few hours afterwards. She's had no reaction so far. She is on one bute 2x a day since last night.
