My mare is now 313 days pregnant. Prefoaling vax should be given about 4-6 wks prior to foaling...right? Am I too late? Any info will be greatly appreciated! She is a very fat maiden so I have no idea when she will foal....

Thx!

No I would go ahead and vaccinate if she has not had any problems with the vaccines in the past.

My first crack at a message - we have a maiden mare due to foal the first week in May. We are planning to vaccinate with a 3-way vaccine around the first of April. Are we on the right track? What about deworming? Also, I've read a lot about tying up the placenta during the foaling process. Please elaborate. Is this necessary?

Hello Karen:
Dr. O will answer your questions I am sure, but I will offer my suggestions for your thoughts. I vaccinate my foaling mares 30 days before they are due with an EWT (eastern, western, tetanus) vaccine. My mares also have already received the Pneumabort-K vaccine at the 5, 7th and 9th month of gestation. I paste worm my mares about 3 weeks prior to foaling with an ivermectin product. As to the tying up of the placenta, I do not do this during the foaling process. First of all, I am not always present during foaling and if I am, I do not interfere with the process unless the mare appears to be in trouble. Most mares will clean out the placenta without any problems.
I would say you are on the right track for vaccinating your mare. Hope this information is helpful. Dr. Woodworth

Dr. W has done just fine. I would add that most your questions are already answered in the, Equine Reproduction: Breeding and Foaling section so study the information there.

Just wondering if the same rule goes for a horse due about the middle of July. I usually give my horse the E.W. and tetnus in march or april so should she have it again before foaling? Also what should I do about the West Nile Virus shot. Should I give it to her while pregnant and if so when. We live in N. Central Il where WNV was very bad last year.

Just postpone the vaccines a month to late May and yes it all goes for WNV also.
