Hi, I was wondering what kind of a schedule you would recommend for a very hard-keeping horse boarded where there has been some pyrantel resistance documented. Daily dewormer is thus not an option, so I have been deworming my mare accordingly to your schedule, but increasing the frequency. My question is what to do when I reach the Quest year. I know that moxidectin shouldn't be given more than every three months because it's fat stored and accumulation of the drug in the body has been shown to cause neurological problems in the horse. What should I do for the Quest year?

Cynthia, while it is true that moxidectin has a prolonged period of excretion due to retention I do not believe more frequent use represents a significant danger and I do not know of any studies that suggest such. I would be interested if you know of some. The vast majority of the drug is gone in the first 17 days and tiny residual amounts detected out for as long as 58 more days. Moxidectin does not cause clinical signs at 3 times an overdose. Something you will never get close to approaching if you use if every 1.5 to 2 months. DrO
