Hi Dr. O,

I would like your advice about shipping a pregnant mare. I have the opportunity to lease a mare, and keep the foal once it's weaned. The mare is located in Missouri and will be coming to New Mexico, about a 900 mile trip. The mare is due to foal in mid to late March.

Is it safe to ship a mare that only has two months left until her due date? I'm probably going to have her professionally shipped, because the shippers have better equipment (ie, air-ride suspension trailers, etc).

Thanks,
Nicole

You see some mares 9 month pregnant that don't look pregnant and then you see some that are already having trouble getting around. So this really needs to be judged by someone who can examine the mare and make a informed evaluation about how well the mare is doing.

No matter what the circumstances you will increase the risk of something happening: auto accident, decreased resistance, exposure to new infectious diseases (particularly herpes), etc... So there will be a slight increased risk to the pregnancy under the best of circumstances but many would consider it acceptable risk if the mare is healthy and moving around well.
