I have a mare with rotation in both fronts (13%+ and originally she penetrated on both feet). Till now, she's been barefoot, but my farrier is recomending Cytek shoes for her. Research on the web turns up quite a few people complaining about them and some who love them. From their design, they appear to move the break over point really far back on the hoof. My vet is scheduled for this coming friday to do radiograph and I am going to talk to him about them... but I wanted to find out if anybody is having good or bad results from these shoes and if vets are seeing them cause any problems. The discussion came up because the mare has pain in the winter when the ground is frozen rock hard and I am looking for a way to keep her more comfortable. Before this I was wrapping heavy pads onto her feet and that had been good, but is a pain for me, but works better than boots.

I wonder if there is any recent information (not advertisements) in THE ANVIL or through the AFA. You might, also, contact Dr. Steve O'Grady, specialist in Equine Podiatry at Northern Virginia Equine . . .

We put my horse in them a while ago... they worked for about 6 months... but I did not like the way my horse's hoof looked after a 1/2 a year in them.. his hoofs started to look like square blocks.. and well , he became sore in them again... Now we were addressing different issues in his hoof, and I do believe in the beginning they were fine... but with time / and the shape changing ..
He is now in reg shoes and doing as well as we can expect with him... I know my farrier will only use them for short periods of time... he said he noticed an improvement in the beginning but with time he would have to change the shoes on other horses as well.. ... UCD recommends them..

just my two cents...

On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots...

Hi,
Another good Equine Podiatrist is Dr.Andrea Floyd. She is also located in VA, like the above mentioned vet. Her website is www.serenityequine.com and I believe she charges $200 for a consultation. She has done wonders with horses that seem hopeless.

I looked at the serenityequine site. I couldn't find a description of the surgery treatment that she was using for founder anywhere, so I've sent her an email and photos and will ask my vet about her.

Any information about surgical approach to founder would be appreciated
