In the general article about vaccines, under strangles Dr O states " ... there is a risk with its use that has nothing to do with adverse reactions. This Strangles vaccine, like the injectable, still allows shedding of pathogenic Strangles to occur following exposure to disease. Because the vaccinate may not show much in the way of clinical signs he is more prone to spread the disease around. We know from past experiences in veterinary medicine that a vaccine can make a disease tolerable enough to put up with but allowed the disease to become established in the areas of vaccine use."

Sorry to be so dense, but I really do not understand what is being said here. Does this mean that
1) in a barn with no history of strangles, if we get the vaccination we will be risking introducing strangles into the environment?
OR
2)is it that once vaccinated, if the animal is later exposed to strangles, the animal may then become a carrier without showing signs of infection?

Second dumb question - there is a claim of a unique strain strangles in my area (Ottawa Valley in Ontario, Canada). Is this possible? If so, then would the vaccine work? (gee I really wish I had paid more attention in Biology class all those years ago!!)

I feel SO stupid asking these questions but I really need to know!!!

I think these are fine questions. As for your first: It is mainly that vaccinted horses can become exposed to Strangles, carry the organism showing minimal clinical signes and then spread it to nonvaccinates. If everyone in the barn is vaccinated with the new IN vaccine this would be of minimal concern, If some are and some arn't that could be a mess.

Concerning the second I have received 2 emails about such an occurence but cannot verify it. It sounds like regular strangles to me but I cannot be sure. If my farm were in the middle of a confirmed outbreak I would vaccinate witht the new IN vaccine.
