Recently my endurance horse has had a very low energy level (unusual for her) and when she did not shed her winter coat in the usual manner I finally realized something was wrong. I made an appt with my vet then checked her health records. I do my own worming and vacinations. I had overlooked a scheduled worming! 12/1/99 she was wormed with Quest but went without worming till 4/12/00 when I gave her a dose with Ivermectin. On 4/14/00 she had checked by the vet and blood and fecal taken for testing. The CBC blood tests showed nothing out of "Norm" except a slightly low red blood cell count. We are still waiting on thyroid and selenium tes results. The fecal was fine. I'm concerned that my horse may have a lot of encysted small strongyles (sp?) or possibly tape worms. She hasn't had a double dose of Strongid since last spring. Do tapes show clearly in a fecal? I know the encysted worms aren't detectable by fecal tests. I did ask my vet about worming for the encysted worms and how soon I could do it. She didn't commit herself to a definite recommendation of what to use or do except she did say not to worm for another 6 weeks because the ivermectin was still in her system. Can I SAFELY get in and worm sooner with the 5 x dose of Panacur and turn around and worm for tapes? |

Bonnie, If your horse was on pastures that only had horses with good deworming histories (see article) for the past year it is very unlikely missing one deworming has resulted in this problem: with a good deworming program there are few infective larvae on the pasture. If you think the pastures are heavily contaminated, and your horses have been exposed, I know of no good reason not to go ahead and use the Panacur. Concerning all the other tests, review the articles on Diseases: Cardiovascular: Anemia , Diseases: Endocrine: Hypothyroidism, and Care for Horses: Nutrition: Selenium in Horses, for useful information. Hi Doc. I've been looking for a post about how to go about taking a horse off of Strongid C, and beginning paste worming. I haven't found anything to help me out. My horse is a very finicky eater, and some days she eats the pellets, and some days she doesn't. I'm afraid she's not getting enough of the medecine, so I've decided to begin a paste deworming program. Do I give a dose of Ivermectin immediately after stopping the pellets? Then continue with a paste deworm program afterwards? Or is there a more proper way to make the change. Thanks, Tony |
