You could say the bulbs are supposed to be soft and spongy normally compared with say the wall or sole. Also some small cracks in the keratin are not that abnormal. Could you post a picture Ken or give us more info?

Dr. O,
A month ago my farrier told me to apply hoof conditioner daily to the coronet band of my mare's hooves to keep them conditioned in this dry weather. Two days ago I noticed that the front left coronet band, above the toe area, started darkening and peeling back. Today the wound is worse. The area is spongier than normal, and hide and hair is peeling back. The affected area is about three inches wide by an inch high. I hosed it clean with cold water. Should I apply a medication, or try to wrap it closed?

Welcome Roberta,
Unfortunately darker and peeling back does not give me enough information to be helpful, I am having trouble picturing what you are describing. When you call it a wound is there bleeding and bloody tissue exposed? When you say you hosed it clean: did the dark color wash off?
