Hello, and thank you in advance for your reply. I really need this information. Question is this, if a horse did not recieve a tetanus booster in the past year and has an injury, should he recieve a booster or antitoxin, or both? Is it safe to have both in the bloodstream at the same time? |

In my opinion, and this would be controversial, if the horse had a solid history of vaccination prior to the missed year, I would administer just the toxoid. If the past history of vaccination was spottty I would give both. DrO |

Question on Tetanus, Why is the tetanus vaccine recommended yearly in horses and in humans only 5-10 years? Alice |

Because we have no research in horses on how long it lasts. DrO |

Old discussion resurrected: I was told this morning that I need to give my injured mare a tetanus toxiod OR antitoxin (both were mentioned) because the tetanus vaccine is only good for 6 months. Is this correct? I read in your articles that it is good for 1 year. My horses are vaccinated yearly and twice a year for WNV. If tetanus vaccine is, indeed, good for only 6 months, then why isn't it give at six month intervals? The vet wants me to bring the mare in this afternoon for her tetanus shot. I wanted to read up on it because I remember hearing about the toxoid vs antitoxin and wanted to make sure I had correct info, and the HA articles states,"Antitoxin should only be used in horses with wounds and no history of tetanus vaccination. The mare does have a wound, but is also up on her yearly vaccines, so would seem to not need the antitoxin. My question is: "Does she really need the tetanus toxoid shot if she is up to date on her vaccines?" Thank you. |

Holly I know my vet has said if their booster is past 6 mos. you should give an anti-toxin shot....to be on the safe side. I hate given unneeded shots. Last time he was here he showed me a pic of an Amish horse he was called to treat...it had tetanus and was laid out flat like a board, he said the jaws were clamped so tight they couldn't open them with a board. Legs unbendable. Of course this horse had no shots at all. Has she had a shot in the last 6 mos.? if so I don't think I would worry about it, well yes I would |

If Dr. O's article says it is good for a year, I would go with that. Shots of the wrong type for tetanus can cause massive liver problems -- a SERIOUS health problem. |

I use my recommendations in my practice Holly and do not know of any cases of tetanus that have ever occurred when used as directed in the article. I have seen 2 cases of antitoxin induced chronic active hepatitis. DrO |

Thank you, Dr. O. I didn't get your reponse until after I had to truck the mare in to the vet, so they gave her the toxoid. All my guys are due (it's a bit early for a few of them, but want to get them all done at once) for their fall vaccines next week, and the vet said that the toxoid is in the 5-in-1 vaccine that the horses will be getting and that it is okay for the mare to have another dose next week with no ill effects. If you have any concerns about double dosing within such a short time frame, could you please alert me? Otherwise, I'll go ahead with the 5-in-1s for all the horses next week. |
