Posted on Thursday, Apr 6, 2006 - 7:40 am: I have a mare that is de-wormed every 2 months, every other time with Ivermectin and in between rotating between Strongid and Anthelcide. I just tried to give her Anthelcide....I have to mix it in with her food (I am aware that this decreases effectiveness, but I have no alternative!) and she only picked at it. I'm not sure how much she got, but definitely not much! How soon can I de-worm her again since she didn't really get anything and what type of de-wormer should I use this time? Will any worms she has have built up a resistance to the Anthelcide since she didn't receive much? Is it safe to use it again at another time in her schedule? I would really like to de-worm her again ASAP if it is safe/possible as I am worried too because I fell a bit behind on the schedule. Thanks for your help! |

For an explanation as to why see the overview article of deworming. That said you can immediately deworm your horse without worry. There is not a significant increase of a chance of a toxic reaction even if the horse had got all the first dose. We recommend you start using our programs. For help with teaching your horse to behave for deworming see, Training Horses » Training Your Horse's Mind » Modifying a Horses Behavior: Conditioned Responses. DrO |

Bought my first two last summer, and I've been putting off deworming them because I don't know how to do it! I am very short and my horses are very tall (LOL). I have the ivermectin syringes to use, but my question to you is: Since it is going to be almost impossible for me to stick a syringe in my horses' mouth and have them stand still for me to squirt it, couldn't I just squirt the paste onto their feed supplements as a top dress? If it all goes to their stomach anyway, what is the harm of doing it that way? By the way, I am also using Strongid 2X daily for both of the horses. Any advice would be appreciated. |

That said if it is the best you can do consider increasing the dose about 20% with the approv al of your veterinarian. However I would look upon this as a training challenge to teach your horse to not raise his head when pasted. I recommend you use response conditioning described at Training & Conditioning Horses » Behavior and Training » Modifying a Horses Behavior: Conditioned Responses. Concerning what products to use and when, review the article Horse Care » Worms, Deworming, Parasite Control » Overview of Deworming. We do not recommend the long term use of Strongid daily and the article explains why.
