Hi everyone

My mare Amanda was measured yesterday and is 17.3hh at 4 years old! Do you think she will be more than 18hh when she is 6 or 7 years old? She is really growing fast at the moment.

I don't know how high her sire was but her mom was only 14.2hh!

I'd love to know what you think her hight will be in a few years time!

Regards
Lea-Anne

Lea-Anne,
I can't help you with your question, but I did want to say Hi. I'm originally from your area, haven't been back for years. I'm so glad this community extends all the way to South Africa. The Beat of the African Drum forever in my heart.
My TWH is 17.2h At 4 years old he was 17.1h, so not much growth after that, but it is a different breed. I have trouble mounting, I am very creative with environmental assistance ergo rocks, logs etc. How the heck do you manage?

Hi Ilona

Its great to know that there is someone else from South Africa too. Although you're not here anymore.

For mounting I use a mounting block though I still have to stretch a bit for the stirrup! I don't know what I'm going to do at a show it will be a problem!

Amanda is definitely going through a growth spurt she's HUGE but is really a Gentle Giant. I'd love to know what the others members think how high she'll become!!

I know some Arabians continue to grow a little until they are 5 or so. Is her rump higher than her withers? Sometimes, even if they have full bone growth, when a horse gets muscled up they seem a little taller, too.

At 5'3" with arthritic knees, I have trouble getting on just about any horse. I use a plastic step stool I picked up cheaply at Walmart. It's not as tall as a mounting block, but I step on it with my right foot and into the stirrup with my left, and it makes enough difference that I don't have to "climb up." I have one in my truck, too, so I can check the oil and climb into the bed.

Hi Sara

Yes, her rump is much higher than her withers at the moment. According to the vet her growth plates are still open. She thinks Amanda will be over 18hh. I know that these horse grow up to the age of 6 to 7 years of age.

Lea-Anne, Amazing to have such a tall horse from a short mare. No idea about the sire?
I got the opposite, mom was over 17, filly at 4 is only 15.1.
Yes, growth plates in the withers don't close until 7.
Dr. O has a growth chart estimation article that may give you an idea of where she'll finish.
Hope you're flexible....lucky you.

While your horses growth plates may appear open on radiographs, careful examination of growth plates in horses that have died early suggest they have quit growing at this point. However many people do note further growth in their horses after this time and it seems most likely they are looking at added muscle and fat to the epaxial area of the back.

Hi everyone

I could only find a out that her sire was about 17hh. I traced his pedigree back to 1820 and there were a few horses that were almost 19hh! Maybe that has an influence on her height.

Thank you for all your help!

Maybe someone can help me. I'm having trouble finding information on Amanda's sire. His name is Doura Champion of the Glen(25333)v.96.

His sire is Doura Magnificent(25119) v85.
His dam is Flash of the Glen (73064)v89.

I've contacted a few people but they did not respond and its has been months. If you have photos of him I'd love to see them.

All information will be appreciated!

Thank you again

Sorry I forgot to ask this earlier. Is the measuring tape accurate to measure Amanda's height? Thanks.

Lea-Anne, I did several seaches without much luck. What I did discouver is that Doura Magnificent appears to be the sire of a number of champion Clydesdales.
If you were to email the breed reg or some of the societies one of them may be able to help you.
Good luck

Yes Lea-Anne, Those measuring tapes are accurate as long as you follow the directions on the tape with precision.

Hi Ilona,
I just looked at your website. Wish I had seen it earlier. I just got back from vacation in Sedona. Breathtakingly beautiful! You are lucky to live there. I would have liked to have taken one of your workshops out there.
Sorry for hijacking the post, Lea-Anne!

Hi everyone

Thanks for the help and advice. Lori I have emailed a few societies and they said they will look for info but never came back to me. I asked again later on but still no reply.

All that I could find was a photo of Barons Pride and Darnley (they are in Doura Champion of the Glen's pedigree) but nothing else. Does anyone know where else I can look?

Erika its fine! I agree with you about the website.

Hi everyone!

Amanda was measured yesterday with a proper measuring stick (she was measured with a tape earlier this year)and guess what: she measured 16.2hh! What a shock! That measuring tape must have been VERY wrong.

Just thought I'd let you know.
