We have an Orphan foal born July 12, 2000 her Dam passed on day 4 after giving birth so the foal did have ample colostrum at birth. The foal is eating well and is fat and sassy, we have a big show coming to the area in the middle of Sept. I would like to take her and show her but only if she can be vaccinated against everything possible, my concern is she won't be the recommended 3 mos. of age or above for some of these vaccinations and of course won't have any boosters in by this time, what are your thoughts and advice on early vaccinations, are they o.k. to give early? Will she have the same protection as if vaccinated later? Any bad reactions that can be expected? I don't want to put this little filly in harms way for anything. Please advise!!!

Thank You,
Julie

Hello Julie,
The influenza vaccine is inactivated by the maternal immunity. We are unsure as to the affects of most the other vaccines available, we are pretty sure the tetanus is OK. They are unlikely to do harm but protection will be iffy for all but the tetanus.

Thank You Dr.O for your honesty and quick response. For her safety and my peice of mind I had better sit this show out. Thanks Again.
