Hi,
I have a horse that just had colic surgery and has been on antibiotics. Prior to his colic he had neer coliced before but he had been on a probiotic for 1.5 years. A couple weeks before his colic we took him off. He has also had trouble with diarhera. Should we put him back on it or let it be. Or is there another supplement that would help.

Hello Katherine,
What was the cause of the colic? We have some information on probiotics in: Care: Nutrition: Current Concepts.

dear drO,
Well, the colic was called anterior enteritis. They don't know what caused it but we were thinking it might be because we took him off the probiotic.

An interesting thought. Most of us believe AE could be a, as yet, unproven manifestation of clostridia infection of the upper small bowel. Coming off the probiotic, particularly a live culture product, might cause a change is flora....but I think it is equally possible to be coincidental. I really do not think you can hurt trying it to see if it helps the diarrhea, but next time you take him off, I would do it very slowly. In fact I would start it up slowly. This should all be done with the approval of your vet and with his/her supervision.
