I worm my horses every 2mos. with zimectrin and also the double does of strongid for tapes. It is regular protocol around here to worm with zimectrin after the first hard freeze for bots, and then not to worry about worming after the ground is froze til spring. My horse are fed in a bunk during the winter and their hay is not exposed to fresh manure. Is it nescessary to worm during the frozen months when the horses are in a closed herd? I live in the upper midwest and when it freezes here it usually stays that way for awhile.

The best way to answer this question, Diane, is by running fecals about half way through and at the end of winter. It all depends on whether you have significant amounts of young larvae that are resistant to even zimectirn and Quest at the time of your last deworming.

Hi
Dr. O correct me if I am wrong but don't some types of worms live in different parts of the horse at different stages of their developement so therefore you could still have worms present doing their damage even though none show in a fecal sample. For example don't some kinds of worms actually burrow into the lining of the horses gut making holes in it? Or am I all wrong?

You are correct Julie, the strengths and weaknesses of running fecals and how to interpret the results is gone over in the article » Care for Horses » Deworming and Parasite Control » Overview of Deworming. Also you will find the life cycles of all the horse parasites in, Equine Diseases » Colic and GI Diseases » Parasites and Worms.
