I am wondering how bad it is for horses to ingest crushed stone. Both hay and picking grass through. Is it something that can be managed with the current supplements or should it be avoided altogether? |

Hi Gwen, a neighbor of ours put down crushed stone in their lean-to and all around the outside of it. The crushed stone was dragged out to pasture when they went in and out of their lean-to. They fed hay right outside on the crushed stone, and the grass got grazed short in the summer so they picked some up grazing also. One mare coliced badly and the vet couldn't get her comfortable no matter what, so they sent her to the vet hospital to perform surgery. I kid you not they took approx. 50#'s of crushed rock out of her! There were 4 horses on this set-up and she was the only one that had a problem, in my opinion not worth the risk. My neighbors removed all crushed stone. |

We use crushed stone (sand rock) in our stalls but we bed over it heavily with shavings. If you have a horse that seems to go out of his way to eat it you should avoid it all together.
