Hi, I have a 5 year old, very laid back and wonderful gelding. Since I purchased him 2 years ago, he will often urinate on the trail at least once during our ride and sometimes our rides are only 1 hour! At first I thought, no big deal - it's just him. BUT, lately it's been even more often than that. On a 2 1/2 hour ride, he will sometimes urinate 3 times. He doesn't appear to be straining however. Because he is laid back and would rather stop to nibble grass on the warm days and take a rest, I thought maybe it's just his way of getting the break he needs and looking for a blade of grass at the same time. He is pretty sneaky that way...but like I said, 3 times seems unusual. I read the articles here that you have available and I did see that selenium toxicity can cause frequent urination. I have loose minerals available with sel/e in it and my horses do go through that really fast. (Vigertone brand)Sometimes consuming a 25 lb bag in 3 weeks time. Not sure how much MY horse is eating though since they are on pasture 24/7. (we own 4 geldings) I put about 100-125 miles per month on my horse so I also suppliment with a sel/e treat that I make myself. (oats, flaxseed, molasses and applesauce). This treat I give him every day and it contains 1/3 oz of sel/e on each one. (We live in a sel/e deficient area) Our temps here are about 75-90 right now, with some humidity and I ride in the evenings mainly so although it's warm, my horse rarely sweats to excess. Our rides are easy and enjoyable.
Having said all of that, could the frequent urination be due to excess sel/e? Or is there something else that may be the issue? We live in a rural area and vets only come to do farm calls once a month. Before I schedule a visit, just wanted your opinion. Thank you. |

No I don't think it is related to the E/Se but if you feed excessive electrolytes (salts) this will cause more frequent urination. We have an article on diseases that cause horses to urinate a lot and you will find it at, Diseases of Horses ยป Urinary System.
