As anyone had any experience of an apparently sound horse showing a severe lameness after flexion?
A friend was devastated when the horse she had just sold for a good price failed the prepurchase exam. He was lame in both front fetlocks.
She got him off the track two years ago, unvetted but a day after he had raced sound. In the two years he only had one incident of lameness, after a bit of paddock high jinks. At the time one front fetlock was xrayed, and showed no problems. It was put down to a strained tendon, and after 10 days of rest he was completely sound again. He's been doing dressage and jumping and has had no further problems.
The vet is coming back this week to repeat the exam, and if he still shows signs of lameness both fetlocks will be xrayed.
Another vet told her the flexion test was "controversial', but was nevertheless required in order to pass a soundness test.
Any thoughts? Is the flexion test a reliable indicator of future problems?

Yes Karen,
I have sound horses in my practice that fail the flexion test. We know from a recent experiemnt reported at last years AAEP meeting that many sound horses will fail a flexion test. For more information see Diseases: Lameness: The Diagnosis of Lameness.

Thanks, Dr O. I found that very useful. May I suggest a separate article on the prepurchase exam? It's something almost all of us will require at some time, and it is useful to be to able to put the various tests in a context which makes them more meaningful.
