Dr. O---
I have a quick question for you, but I think I know the answer. My horse is currently on a vitamin/mineral supplement called equi-shine. My vet suggested that since our area is very deficient on selenium, that I increase my horse's vit e/ selenium intake. He said that it will benefit my horse also with his muscle repair due to intense training. I called the company that deals with this product. The dose he gets is 8 ounces a day of this pelleted supplement. The vit e content is 1500mg per pound and the selenium is 17.5ppm per pound. I figured he got roughly 8.7ppm(0.087mg) of selenium/day. The supplement that we were looking at offered an additional 1mg of selenium per day as well as 1500mg vit e. I wasn't concerend about the vit e, but was with the selenium content. From reading your articles, I would tend to say that this dose of selenium would be too high to feed. Am I correct?
Thanks for your time.

Well it will depend on the size of your horse but 1 mg selenium per 1000lbs of horse a day is about the correct level for a diet that is known to be deficient in Se.
