Hello, Dr.O:
Our 9 year old Selle-Français mare licks everything: concrete, walls, metal bars, you name it! She is getting 3 daily feeds ( Mainring blue+a little salt+ tricalcic phosphate ),cereal hay ( unfortunatelly, our hay is a bit too dry )and is turned out every day for about 3 or 4 hours.
I would appreciate any advise on the reason why she's doing this. Does she lack any nutrient? She also eats manure (funnilly, not her own ), as do most of the other horses at our yard.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello Maria,
This could just be behavior or represent an attempt at satisfiying some poorly defined nutritional need. Since I do not have the amounts of each feed, the analysis of your feeds and hay, or being able to examine the condition of your horse, I cannot judge your diet. The best way to answer your question is to go through the articles on nutrition starting at an overview and see how your diet compares with what we recommend. Hope this helps.
