I got a lesson in "ouchy feet" recently, and thought I'd share what I learned.

My mare lost a shoe last week, and it was only when she was walked down pavement that it made her ouchy. She's lost shoes before, though it's pretty rare, and it's never been an issue, we continue work -- I just avoid riding her on rocky trails.

But this time, to my horror, she went lame walking on the paved road. As I packed her foot with epsom goo, and put gauze and duct tape over it, I felt a big bump. Thinking I had inadvertently packed a rock in there along with the epsom goo, I pulled all the duct tape off and had a look. Lo and behold, she had a lump that was a raised part of her bar near the tip of the frog. I'm not sure if the farrier just hadn't rasped the foot level, or what the issue was, but when he came to shoe 2 days later, there was a huge, obvious bruise there.

I'm happy that I had the presence of mind to take out the farrier's rasp and level that high point, the moment I found it. I've never trimmed a foot, and I feel a certain hesitancy to take a rasp to a foot. But: I didn't hesitate on this bump, and I'm sure I made her a lot more comfortable doing so.

Thought I'd pass that along in case anyone else finds themselves "in between" a shoe off and their farrier's visit to replace it.

Melissa
