Hi. We have an 8 year old mare who is pregant (for the first time). . . although she did not appear to be pregant, she was-we found out this past week-she even had the vet fooled!! She is due in 2-1/2 months, so she is 8-1/2 months along now. The mare is on a good worming program, is healthy, and was vaccinated for E/W, Influenza, Tetanus and Rabies in August, 2000. We did not administer the Rhino vaccine at that time, but did administer it this past weekend, since we found out she was pregant. I am a bit concerned about not having administered the Rhino vaccine throughout the pregnancy. Our vet told us to administer it now(which we did), and then again in 3 weeks (along with the other vaccinations). Dr. O, do you think the foal will be in any danger from this? I have heard of cases where mares have their foals w/o having been given the Rhino vaccine and have had healthy foals, and in some cases, the foals die after a day or two. What other dangers (other than possible death) might be foal be in due to this? What are the chances the foal might die? Thank you for your advice. I realize this would be a good question for my own veterinarian, but I did not start worrying about it until after she left - I guess due to all the excitement about finding out we had a pregnant mare.

I do not think you are likely to lose the foal over this Donna. Though it is one of the common causes of late term abortion, late term abortion is pretty rare, even in the unvaccinated. EHV-1 (Rhino) abortion is mainly a problem on large breeding farms and you should realize the vaccine is not anywhere near 100% effective.

Perhaps reading the article on EHV-1 abortion would help Equine Diseases: Reproductive Diseases: Problems Keeping Mares Pregnant: Equine Herpes & Abortion
