One of the stallions that boards with us just returned from the veterinary hospital after fracturing his pastern. He needs to be kept quiet in a small space, which was going to present a problem for us: the only place we have away from mares is in the stallion barn where the stalls are double-sized. Then we hit on a solution: we filled half of his stall up with bales of hay (the type we use for bedding) from floor to ceiling. As he improves, and is allowed more room to move, we will remove a layer at a time until he once again has use of the full stall. The bales we remove will return to our hay barn, where they will await their use with mares and foals. He's been home for 2 weeks now, and we are having no problems with the arrangement. The horse is near his 'friends" and in a familiar environment, so the adjustment was easy.

we stored our straw along one side of the pony's stable all last winter. the stable is 14ft x 12ft so by going a two bales sideways wide and up to the roof i could store 40 bales. it was extra insulation and the stable was still nearly 12ft square. we did try hay but she ate the bottom bales!!
